Candace Small
The turnaround in the life of Candace Small, a high school dropout and a recovering drug addict, not only has made her an outstanding student but a model and helper for other students.
Small, 29, of Thomasville recently graduated from Guilford Technical Community College where she was named the outstanding college transfer graduate. Small also received GTCC President Dr. Don Cameron's annual scholarship, which covers tuition and fees to UNCG for two years.
She received other awards, and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa for her 4.0 grade point average and finished college with a 3.945 GPA.
These stellar accomplishments came while she was caring for three children.
Small's decision to enroll in college came in 2005. "I am the wife of a National Guard solider who served in Iraq in Operation Freedom," she said. "While my husband was overseas I was pregnant caring for two children, and working a fulltime job."
As a GTCC student, Small not only was a whiz in math but also was an outstanding helper for other students. She was able to bring out the best in students, according to Susan Barbitta, a math instructor in the Developmental Education Dept. "She is a true leader in every sense of the word," Barbitta said.
