Henry Stumpf
Henry Stumpf sent himself to the principal's office.
Stumpf grew up in New York. Shortly after retiring from long career in law enforcement with the New York City Police Department, he moved south. Then 57, Stumpf enrolled at Craven Community College in New Bern because he wanted to earn a college degree. "I knew that the community college was a good place for non-traditional students, so I enrolled," Stumpf said. He also knew he wasn't finished with work, but he wanted to do something new.
"If anyone is thinking of going back to college, I'd tell them to do it," Stumpf said. "Just by taking a few classes, you can develop some new interests. You need to get your education."
He earned his associate's degree at Craven and transferred to East Carolina University, where he went on to earn a bachelor's degree, a teaching certificate, a master's degree and a doctoral degree.
"If you don't know what you want to do, take a few classes and you'll find it," he said.
Stumpf found a new passion at Craven and used his time in college as a springboard into school administration. Today, he serves as principal at Plain View Elementary School in Sampson County.
