Anthony Hagans
Anthony Hagans' career was put on hold by health problems in 2005. After two years of focusing on regaining his health, he began looking for work. “Everywhere I went they told me I needed a degree, and I finally listened.”
Hagans enrolled in the Business Administration program at Edgecombe Community College in the summer of 2006. Later, he made a decision to become a teacher. Hagans, 38, will graduate in May 2009 with an associate degree in business administration. He plans to attend N.C. Wesleyan College to pursue a bachelor's degree, majoring in English with a minor in computer information systems. Ultimately, Hagans hopes to teach English at the college level.
He credits God for his accomplishments, his wife and daughter for being a wonderful support system, and Gwen Hyman, faculty administrative assistant on ECC's Rocky Mount campus, as his academic mentor. “She has shown me that education is essential to a promising future.”
Hagans says, “Edgecombe Community College has been my family away from family. Instructors, staff, and even other students have offered information, guidance, and assistance whenever I have needed it. Family helping family: that's what it's all about.”
