Linwood Martin

Linwood Martin After Linwood Martin, Sr. graduated from high school, his mother offered him $500 to go to Vance-Granville Community College, but at the time, he didn't think higher education was for him. Instead, he went to work and then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979.

After a 24-year career in the Navy in which he traveled the world, Martin returned to Vance County, where he had grown up. Now, “I was finally able to attend the college where my mother had wanted me to go,” Martin recalled.

He had been a counselor in the Navy, so he enrolled in VGCC's Human Services Technology program. The education and interaction with students and faculty at VGCC helped him transition back into civilian life.

“It was very therapeutic for me,” Martin said. Building upon college credits he had earned while in the Navy, Martin graduated with an associate degree. His education prepared him for a new challenge, as coordinator for a youth mentoring program with the Henderson-Vance Parks and Recreation Department.
