Frankie Owens
Frankie Owens began his commercial painting career right out of high school, painting water towers. “You could get $3.75 an hour to paint or $4 if you'd climb the tanks. I climbed the tank the first day and got a raise,” Owens says.
Owens' approach to his job was the same he used when he decided to go back to school to change his career and his life. “I was still doing contract painting when I enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at MCC,” Owens said. He went to school at night and on Saturdays and said he appreciated the flexibility of the program which allowed him to continue working full-time. While completing his A.A.S. degree, Owens obtained employment as a jailor and enrolled in the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program. “My instructors did everything they could to train us physically and mentally to pass the State Exam,” Owens said. “They were very straightforward to make sure this was something we really wanted to get into.”
Owens received his BLET certification and his degree in Criminal Justice in the same year. Since then, he has obtained a position as Deputy Sheriff for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
