Jessica Wright
Jessica Wright was a young lady with a GED from Surry Community College, but no real direction for her life, when she read about a new program, the Associate's in Fine Arts Degree. Jessica began classes at Surry in 1999, but had to stop attending twice due to pregnancies. She returned to school with the birth of both of her sons, but tragedy struck when her youngest son, Caleb, died of cancer when he was only two years old. Jessica found that going back to school helped her deal with the loss and obtaining her degree was a perfect fit for her as she searched for a road to recovery.
Today, Jessica still takes every art course available, is working on finishing up her AFA, and is teaching three ceramics courses for Continuing Education at Surry Community College. Her life is full of purpose and she says, “SCC opened doors for me that I never thought possible! Through encouragement from my instructors and financial aid, I was able to establish goals and work towards a degree in an area that I love – the arts. My passion for art is now providing an income for me and I am living the dream!”
Jessica has discovered that being a student at Surry Community College involves more than just attending classes. She has become acquainted with a cohort of fellow artists that have become her family.
