Barbara McCabe
Barbara Mccabe graduated from the Foodservice Management program at FTCC in 1997, earning an associate's degree, and now works as a culinary lab technician at the school.
“I truly enjoyed my culinary classes and participating in the preparation of meal service, and always hoped that someday, I would have an opportunity to return to FTCC and work.” Barbara feels the department head for the Culinary program, Kay Gilbert, has had a tremendous impact on her life.
“Her (Gilbert's) dedication to teaching and her encouragement made me believe in myself. Mrs. Gilbert asked me to teach in an adjunct position, which led to the position I now hold as culinary lab technician,” says McCabe.
“I am currently taking online courses at East Carolina University to complete my bachelor's degree. Mrs. Gilbert inspired me to step outside the box and say ‘yes, I can.'” After graduation, Barbara worked with a local caterer and then opened her own café for four years. With encouragement from her teachers at FTCC, Barbara realized that her dreams were within her reach, and today, she's enjoying her work and enjoying life.
