Tony G. Blash
As a young man, Tony G. Blash of Macon, Georgia found himself at a crossroads, feeling that he had few options or skills. A local employment office directed him to the federal Job Corps training program. He wound up at the Job Corps Center in Kittrell, N.C., which has a partnership with Vance-Granville Community College.
“My experience at Kittrell was the turning point in my life, giving me the tools I needed to become an individual that was highly employable,” Blash said.
Through VGCC, Blash earned associate degrees in therapeutic recreation and recreation associate technology in 1984. “I was determined to go to college and enter a field of study that would make a difference in someone's life,” Blash recalled.
At VGCC, faculty members such as Jane Jackson and Fred Wilson inspired and supported him. Returning to Georgia, Blash eventually graduated with a bachelor's degree in social psychology.
"I feel VGCC gave me a terrific start and a better chance to complete a four-year degree,” Blash said. Today, he is the Medical Education Coordinator at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, supporting all the hospital's medical education programs. Blash has also begun a master's degree program in health-care leadership.
