Julie Smith

Julie Smith Julie Smith's faith runs deep and she believes God put people in her path who would help her have a better life.

She moved to Rockingham as a newlywed and found herself a single mom shortly after her daughter was born. She quickly faced the struggles of a single parent in a low paying job.

Today she is the billing manager at a pediatrician's office. The people in her path include her employer, a friend, her parents, and the faculty and staff at Richmond Community College. Her employer worked around her college schedule, her friend kept her child, her parents assisted financially, and the department chair of RCC's Healthcare Management Technology curriculum provided the instruction she needed to do her job well. He also remains in contact to encourage her to continue her education.

She said her degree belongs to all of these people, not just her.

"The faculty and staff took the time to get to know me and who I am. They provided encouragement along the way, and I've grown by leaps and bounds. I think you take from your college experience what you want. I chose to study, learn, and grow. RCC helped me find myself and something to be passionate about," she said.
