Johannah and Heather Robinette

Johannah and Heather Robinette Johannah and Heather Robinette exemplify the meaning of family support. The mother and daughter began their studies at Mitchell together, though taking separate classes, and shared congratulations as they both received degrees on the same day.

Heather, 21, earned an associate in applied science degree in office system technology while Johannah, 46, received an associate in applied science degree in human services. “(Graduating) feels really good,” Heather said. “It's a different experience to be graduating with your mom.”

Their joint pursuit of education began when Heather graduated high school and set her sights on college. Johannah, who had always wanted to return to school, decided to seize the opportunity to continue her education while also supporting her daughter, who requires the use of a wheelchair. “I was there for her,” Johannah said. “But she took off; she didn't need me much.” Both Johannah and Heather were active in student clubs and organizations. Heather was elected 2009 Spring Court Queen by the student body.

Johannah is now working towards a bachelor's degree in human services from Gardner-Webb. Heather, who has plans to pursue a career in office system technology, volunteers at Habitat for Humanity.
