Misty Fisher

Misty Fisher Too often people find excuses for not making an effort to better themselves through education. Misty Fisher had plenty of excuses — four young children at home, a fifth child on its way, a Marine husband scheduled for deployment to Iraq and not being in a classroom since she dropped out of high school at age 16 — but, she didn't let any of those hurdles stand in the way of earning her GED. After years of limiting herself to a series of dead-end jobs, Misty knew she wanted much broader career opportunities and realized not having a high school diploma or GED were restricting her job options.

With assistance from the Basic Skills Program at Coastal Carolina Community College, Misty earned her GED. “There are so many things I want to do, and I couldn't do them without my GED,” said Misty.

Her plans now include earning a college degree in pursuit of a career in the field of health care. She credits the help and encouragement received from Coastal with giving her a fresh start towards a rewarding career. “The people in Coastal's Basic Skills Program were wonderful,” said Misty. “Not only did they put in extra time and effort to get me enrolled in the program, but you could tell they were people who didn't pre-judge you and were very supportive and encouraging from beginning to end.”
